Kelvin Harrison Jr. is terrific as Steve Harmon, even if the movie itself is a little heavy handed with its messaging. The film features a star-studded ensemble which includes Jennifer Hudson, Jeffrey Wright, John David Washington, Jharrel Jerome, and A$AP Rocky.


8. Mank (2020)

David Fincher’s biographical drama film ‘Mank’ brings to the screen a version of Hollywood as seen through screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’s (Gary Oldman) eyes while he develops the screenplay for the 1941 film ‘Citizen Kane.’ Addressing the critical events of the 30s and 40s, including the rise of Nazi Germany, the 1934 gubernatorial elections, as well as Hollywood politics, the movie showcases how they affect Herman’s work. For fans of ‘Citizen Kane,’ this movie is a must-watch as it portrays the challenges Herman faced to pen the script of Orson Welles’ magnum opus.

MunichThe Edge of War (2022)

An adaption of Robert Harris’s novel of the same name, Munich is set before the start of War World II with the tension of war on the rise. Two former classmates, Hugh Legat (George MacKay) and Paul von Hartmann (Jannis Niewöhner), cross paths in this spy thriller. This dramatic adaption highlights the history of these two men as well as the historical context during the time. Available to stream on Netflix

The Princess Switch (2018)

If you’re looking for some light holiday fare, it doesn’t get much better than The Princess Switch, starring Vanessa Hudgens and…Vanessa Hudgens as a princess and a common baker who switch lives. Also: It has two sequels, and they’re some of the best family movies on Netflix. Available to stream on Netflix

3. Dances With Wolves

In the thick of his heyday as America’s favorite leading man, Kevin Costner made his first foray into directing with this 1990 Western, in which he also starred. Based on Michael Blake’s novel of the same name, Dances With Wolves follows a distraught Union soldier through a life-changing assignment on a remote Civil War outpost. While other white men fear the indigenous Sioux who reside nearby, 1st Lieutenant John J. Dunbar (Costner) makes mindful strides to communicate. Soon welcomed into their circle, he is awed by their community, culture, and compassion. But when ignorant soldiers threaten the tribe, Dunbar and his new friends must fight for survival. With an epic story, awe-striking cinematography, and poignant performances, this powerful period piece was a box office smash that went on to win seven Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. —K.P.

Want a crash course in the female trailblazers who put their stamp on early cinema? Then indulge in this incredible collection of films from the early 1900s. Determined to make it big in the rap industry, Radha strives forward but is met with one obstacle after the other, leading to utter humiliation. However, the 40-year-old refuses to give up, and the rest of the movie follows Radha’s redemption arc as she embraces her responsibilities, explores her boundaries, and learns to embrace color in her life.
