55 Top Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021

Year three (or is two?) of the pandemic. New variations are cropping up like bad pop hits, and we are all still processing the impacts of Covid on ourselves, our loved ones, and the world around us. That’s why I wanted to recommend Covid39 again. The science fiction audio drama is set 39 years in the future but looking back on current times in a way that calls into question our existing relationships and circumstances. Are we choosing our friends and lovers based on the pandemic and our forced closeness? Covid39 follows a couple who are curious if their love stems from the fact that their families lived together during the pandemic. Through audio recordings, letters, emails, and more, the two unearth the locked away memories of their time during the pandemic, the time happening right now for all of us.

This Gimlet Media show has an incredible cast—Catherine Keener, Oscar Isaac, and David Schwimmer, to name just a few regulars. It deals with the ethical quandaries of a woman helping to oversee a government medical experiment, and the format does a great job of toying with narrator reliability. Are the people you’re hearing well-intentioned, or are they lying to themselves and one another? Do they even remember the events they’re supposed to be guiding us through? The show led to a TV series, which is something we can expect from more and more of our favorite audio dramas. Listen now!

Great if you enjoy: Shutter Island, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Bright Sessions

The second show from General Electric’s Podcast Theater is sad and intriguing. Follow a man as he tries to cope with his wife’s sudden death, hooked on and haunted by her audio posts on social media. Surely things are about to get creepy. Listen now!

Great if you enjoy: Her, Black Mirror, The Black Tapes

Dark Tides

Like Mission to Zyxx earlier on the list, Dark Tides is an improvised comedy audio drama. But unlike Mission to Zyxx, which is set in space and on various planets, Dark Tides follows two characters in a science fantasy archipelago setting as they investigate mysteries surrounding the strange location. So, not only is there comedy and science fiction and fantasy elements, but there’s a pretty compelling mystery pushing the story forward. Season three is currently airing with a prequel series of shorter episodes while the creators prep season four and a return to the original storyline. So, now is the perfect time to catch up on all the seasons before the new season airs!

More good stuff for conspiracy theory lovers! Limetown follows a reporter for APR (ahem, sound familiar?) as she uncovers the mysterious disappearance of an entire town. The town, a Mayberry-like setting, was built by a mega-corporation who populated it with scientists and their families for an unspecified reason, stoking the conspiracy theory flames. Each episode is designed to mimic a radio broadcast. The reporter, Lia Haddock, goes deep in her investigation, witnessing some harrowing events as she tries to get answers.

There’s even a prequel novel, which publishes in November.

Girl in Space

More aliens! If you liked the humor of The Martian, you’ll enjoy Girl in Space. Our main character is stuck on a dying ship floating in space. It’s just her and Charlotte, the ship’s AI.

The podcast feels like diary entries. One moment she’s philosophizing about cheese and the next strangers want to take over her ship. They have big guns and, well, she doesn’t. According to its Patreon page, if the show reaches its crowdfunding goal of $2000 (It’s at just over $700), there’ll be a second season.
