Occasionally audio drivers will not be compatible with Windows updates or particular programs. Luckily, updating audio drivers manually is quick and easy.

  3. Right-click your sound card or audio device and select Update Driver

  1. Reboot your PC.

Windows may not detect new drivers. However, there may be updated drivers on the manufacturer’s website. This is primarily the case with third-party sound cards. To check and install new drivers, do the following:

  1. Open Start, type Device Manager, and select it.
  2. Press the dropdown arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers
  3. Right-click your sound card or audio device and select Properties

  1. Head to the manufacturer’s website and search for drivers appropriate for your sound card or audio device.
  2. If there’s a later version than your current driver, select the Download button (ensure that it’s compatible with 32- or 64-bit depending on your system).
  3. Go back to Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your sound card or audio device, and select Update Driver
  1. Select Browse my computer for drivers
  1. In the dropdown menu, select your Downloads folder (usually C:\Users\xxxx\Downloads).
  1. Click Next and follow the setup wizard to completion.
  2. Restart Windows, then check your audio.

If there are no new audio drivers, you can reinstall the current version to see if that fixes the issue.

  1. Open Start, type Device Manager, and select it.
  2. Press the dropdown arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers
  3. Right-click your sound card or audio device and select Uninstall device  > Delete the driver software for this device > Uninstall
  1. Restart your PC.
  2. Upon restarting, your PC should automatically reinstall the latest audio driver.

Conversely, if the low volume issue occurred after you updated, you can attempt to roll back to the previous audio driver and check if that fixes the issue.

  1. Open Start, type Device Manager, and select it.
  2. Press the dropdown arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers
  3. Right-click your sound card or audio device and select Properties
  1. Select the Driver tab, then click Roll Back Driver
  1. Select Yes after you’ve read the instructions.

2. Disable Absolute Volume in Android

“Absolute Volume” is an Android feature that unifies and syncs the volume control on your smartphone and audio devices. This means that increasing your phone’s volume will also increase the volume level of the Bluetooth headphone or speaker. It’s a brilliant feature but sometimes causes the volume of Bluetooth devices to be unacceptably loud—even when your phone’s volume is low.

The “Absolute Volume” feature is enabled by default and tucked away in the Android Developer Options. Disabling the feature will separate the volume levels of your devices and fix volume issues. Try that and see if it helps.

  1. Open the Settings app and select About phone at the bottom of the page.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Build number seven times until you get a “You’re now a developer!” message at the bottom of the screen.
  1. Return to the Settings menu, select System, expand the Advanced section, and select Developer options.
  1. Scroll to the “Networking” section and toggle on Disable absolute volume.

Hardware Volume Controls

Although this seems to be less common nowadays, many laptops and some netbooks actually have a volume control slider, or more likely a rotary volume control on the side or front of the laptop. This is a hardware control and behaves the same way as an inline volume control on a set of headphones and is completely separate from any operating system volume controls or levels.

The control is usually on the side or front of the

The control is usually on the side or front of the laptop, often near the line out, mic and headphone connection sockets. Note these controls are separate to the media controls on some laptops that are between the keyboard and the screen, those do actually alter the master volume level in Windows. The easy way to find out is change the level on your media keys and watch the sliders in the Sound Mixer window.

6. Update or Roll Back Your PC’s Audio Driver

If your headphones or PC speakers volume are still too loud even after disabling audio enhancements, update the drivers powering the devices. But if the problem commenced after installing a buggy driver, roll back the driver to the stable version.

  1. Press the Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
  1. Expand the Audio inputs and outputs category.
  1. Right-click the driver powering your active audio device—headphones, speaker, etc.—and select Properties.
  1. Head to the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
  1. Select Search automatically for drivers and wait for the Device Manager to search your PC and internet for the latest driver version. Make sure your PC has a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection or this won’t work.

To downgrade your device’s audio driver to a previous version, select Roll Back Driver in the driver properties window (see Step #4 above). The option will be grayed out if you haven’t updated the driver.

Step 3: Aternatives to monitor speakers

If you are not using monitor speakers for sound, skip this step. If you using speakers built into a flat panel monitor, you may find that the sound volume is too low for an entertainment environment. Many flat panel monitor designs offer built-in speakers that are suitable for a desktop computing environment, but most monitor designs do not have speakers capable of delivering an experience that is loud enough for entertaining several people from a distance.

To work around this, you can connect powered speakers to the computer and place them near the monitor.

Setting or Locking the Windows Volume Level

It’s quite possible that other software or erroneous settings in Windows keep adjusting the Windows volume when you want it to stay at a certain level. Here’s a couple of tools to help with that.

Speaker Admin

Speaker Admin is a program for XP, Vista, 7 and 8 that can lock your Windows volume level to an exact value at specific times of the day, or it can set the level above or below a certain threshold, for instance quieter in the evenings.

To permanently lock the Windows volume level in Speaker Admin, disable all rules apart from the top one, enter 0 and 24 for the hours, select Exactly for the rule type, enter the volume level to lock to as a percentage and make sure Muted is unticked. Then tick “Only this application can alter system volume” to stop other software trying to alter the master volume in windows, Tick to start with Windows and click Hide to send the program to the background.

Try to alter the master volume now and it will just keep springing back to the level you set. Do note that if you change the default sound device the program needs to be restarted to recognise the change. You can also hide the tray icon and even set a password to stop other users from altering the sound. Watch out for an adware option on install.
