Examples of Use

Web apps and sites can use Chrome’s background feature in all kinds of ways. A Gmail extension may use the functionality to alert you of new messages even when Gmail itself isn’t open. A link safety scanner might want to scan search results in the background, or an offline tool might want to cache documents in the background should your Internet connection go down. Other examples of background apps include utilities which pre-render Web pages so they load quicker when you visit them and tools for notifying you of upcoming events in your schedule.

Disabling Background Activity

If Chrome is closed but there are background pages or apps still running on your PC, this is indicated with a Chrome icon in the notification area of the Windows Taskbar. To stop all Chrome activity, right-click this icon and quit the program. To prevent background pages and apps from running in the first place open up the advanced section of the Chrome Settings page and uncheck the box with the “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed” label. This prevents all extensions and apps from operating whenever Chrome itself isn’t running on the system.
