How To Make Your Own Sandbags for Working Out at Home
Before we get into it, there are different ways to craft the perfect weight training sandbag. Tons of users on the markets have tried just about every method and deemed the one below as the best. It works for making a cost-effective, mid-weight sandbag.
The following materials will be needed to make your sandbag:
- A canvas laundry bag
- A bag of gravel that weighs about 40lbs to 50lbs. It should be noted that pea gravel shouldn’t be used to make sandbags to keep out floods
- A box of contractor garbage bags
- A role of decently priced duct tape
- Zip ties
The items listed above can cost as little as less than $50 and if you think of it, it’s a really good investment. The best part of all of this is that in less than an hour, you’ll have your sandbag and you’ll be ready for an intense workout.

Step 4: Fill Bags With Sand
Now you want to fill both bags with sand. But you don’t need to fill it up all the way. Sand is pretty heavy and you want to remember you’re working with duct tape here. Filling half way will do the trick. It’s also a lot easier to handle during the next step.
Why Sandbags Are a Great Choice for Adding Resistance When Rucking
Another perk of using sandbags when rucking that we haven’t touched on yet is the addition of dynamic resistance aka dynamic tension. Dynamic exercise causes your muscles to stretch and move simultaneously while also activating your joints.
As you build up dynamic resistance when rucking with sandbags, your hips and torso will become stronger and more stable. Now, when you exercise or do everyday lifting, your force transfer is better than it was before. Since sandbags shift as you carry them, they’re a fantastic instrument for more resistance during your rucks.
Sandbag training has been known to be very effective. There are several benefits that come with this type of training and there are tons of commercial sandbags available on the markets. Commercials sandbags come in a range of sizes and unlike the DIY options, they don’t leak at all.
Commercials bags are usually sealed with velcro and they even come with actual sand in them. Commercial alternatives also provide users with more versatility during a workout. However, it should be noted that some brands are known for leaking.

Step 1: What You Need
Here’s the list of what you need: 1 roll of duct tape (I got mine at the local Dollar store) 1 box of Gallon Zip lock bags (again, at local dollar store) That’s it! I have two rolls showing because I made two bags.
You should always have two shells: an inner shell (or multiple inner shells) to hold the sand and an outer shell designed to take a beating. The outer shell should also have handles or grips of some sort. For my project, I used old duffel bags I had lying around.
One Inside the Other.
Individually, each duffel bag was flimsy, so I placed one inside the other to minimize escaping sand. Ignore the sack of cocaine duct taped at the center of the photo; we’ll discuss that later.
