I Put The Wrong Address On My USPS Package

How It Works

You can request that the destination Post Office hold the item for you or have it returned to sender.

  1. Verify that your shipment is eligible for Package Intercept.
  2. If eligible, you can submit your request online after logging in with your USPS.com account.
  3. After submitting your request, you’ll be provided an estimated total (intercept fee plus estimated Priority Mail® postage, if applicable). We will then attempt to intercept and redirect the shipment.
  4. If the shipment is intercepted, your credit card will be charged the $15.95 Package Intercept fee plus any applicable postage. If the actual postage is greater than estimated, any additional postage will be charged accordingly.
  5. Your shipment will be redirected to the original sender or held at the local Post Office for pickup.

Intercept a Package

Have You Received a Misdelivered Package?

Whether you’ve lost a package or found the one you didn’t order on your doorstep, knowing how to handle a misdelivered package can save you a lot of trouble later down the line.

The regulations aren’t always clear, but a delivery mistake is never your fault. As long as you follow all the rules, respect the intended recipient, and communicate with the shipping company–the rest of it is out of your hands.

How much does it cost? usps package intercept

There is a Package Intercept fee of $15.25 that applies to all intercepted shipments. Commercial customers who purchase postage online can also submit their Package Intercept request online.

All intercepted mailpieces that are redirected back to the sender, a new delivery address or a Post Office as Hold For Pickup service through the electronic commercial method are relabeled and handled as a new Priority Mail piece.

The new Priority Mail piece is charged the applicable Priority Mail postage from the location where intercepted to the new destination based on the dimensions, weight, and zone of the piece, except for pieces being redirected back to the sender that was originally sent by Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail or First-Class Mail.

Any applicable postage and fees for sending the intercepted item to a different location or for purchasing an Extra Service will be charged at the time of intercept – if the intercept is possible – or otherwise will be collected at the time of delivery by a USPS carrier.

The USPS Package Intercept fee applies for each mailpiece intercepted. No fee is charged until the item is found and your intercept request is processed. When the order summary page appears, you will see an “Estimated Total” for your USPS Package Intercept order.

Fees are estimated based on whatever information is available on your package – generally, weight and dimensions. Once the package is intercepted, your credit card will be charged an actual cost that may vary from the estimated total.

Additional postage and fees may be applicable to redirect the item as requested by the mailer and will be charged to the requestor’s method of payment, depending on whether a Residential or Commercial account was established, after a successful intercept. Get USPS Package Intercept price information.

Extra Postage Fee ExceptionsItems originally mailed as Priority Mail Express®, and Priority Mail®, as well as First-Class Mail® being redirected to the sender, are not relabeled and bear no additional postage cost. Again, the intercept fee is charged at the time of successful intercept, or collected by the USPS carrier at the time of delivery.

When requests for commercial intercepts are made through the Business Customer Gateway, postage and fees are automatically deducted from the customer’s ACH Debit or Credit (Trust Account), after a successful intercept. An ACH Debit or Credit (Trust Account) is required to pay the USPS Package Intercept fee and any applicable postage and fees (such as Extra Services) for the intercepted item.

USPS Online Tracking

The good thing about the USPS is that they have an efficient online tracking system. This will help you to track the delivery of your package when you order.

There are times when the status shows delivered, but you haven’t received the package yet. This happens, when your parcel has been delivered to the wrong address. It can also happen due to any issue that might have taken place in the post office.

Mistakes with delivery happen all the time. This is why you are advised to keep track of your package. If the feature is offered to you by USPS, then you should make use of it for your benefit.

Tracking your parcel online is simple. All you have to do is enter your tracking number and you will get to see where your package is. The tracking number is given on the mailing receipt that you received from the post office. You can also track your parcel using the confirmation email you received from USPS.

Should I Use USPS’s Package Intercept Service?

Using this service can save you having to replace a package that has gone to the wrong place, so it may well be worth doing. However, if you are sending low value items that are not worth paying more than $15 to redirect, it is probably a better idea to simply treat the package as lost and ship a new one out to the corrected address.

Bear in mind when making this decision that you will also be liable for any additional postage costs incurred while redirecting the package, including upgrading the mail to a new service.

How Do I Pay For USPS Package Intercept?

Once your package has been successfully redirected, you will be charged for the service. Usually, you will be asked to input credit card information when requesting a Package Intercept service. Your credit card will then automatically be charged for the full amount when the parcel is redirected.

Certain customers can also buy some additional services when they pay for the package to be intercepted. For example, they can pay to insure it or get a signature confirmation when the package is delivered.

They can also pay for Adult Signature Restricted Delivery (e.g. if the package contains alcohol or weapons) and Adult Signature Required. These are not available to all customers, however; you must be a retailer or a commercial seller in order to access these additional services.

This is all you need to know about the USPS delivery to the wrong address. Be careful while writing the recipient’s address on the mail to avoid any mistake on your part as that will cost you a lot of effort and money to get back your lost parcel. USPS will help you retrieve your parcel whether it’s their fault or not.

So that’s it for today! We will be back with another fascinating and informational article that will help you know more about every aspect of the delivery services provided by the USPS. Thank you for reading!

How to avoid this from happening again?

Confirming the correct address especially the zip code with the sender is vital when expecting any packages. Also, if anyone is moving out, confirm with them they individually change their address, not the whole family.

Lastly, if you apply for a change of address, be sure to keep an eye out for any mail that may arrive at your old address. USPS will have all your mail forwarded to your new address for the first 10-15 days.

Why would a package be forwarded?

There are a few reasons as to why USPS would forward your package.

1- Wrong Postal Code

The most common of them is an incorrect zip code/ postal code. One wrong digit out of the five changes the whole address.

2- You Applied for Post Office Change of Address

Another reason your mail would be forwarded is if you applied for a USPS change of address so your mail and packages will start to be forwarded to the new address instead.

If you did not apply for a change of address then possibly a family member or friend who moved out accidentally changed your address.

However, if you do apply for a change of address and move while making the order, the package may be delivered to the old address and then forwarded to the new one.

Your package tracking number will still be the same even after the package has been forwarded so you won’t need to worry about a new one.

Contact your Post Office immediately to find out why your package is being forwarded so you can start to take action.

What to do and not to do in case of international delivery?

Here are some important things to keep in mind.

  • Keep a check on your mailbox, in case the local post office sends you a notice.
  • You should contact the customs office and request them to inquire about your package.

  • Getting worried about your package is fine. But there is no need for you to panic. This will only mess up the situation further.
  • In the case of international deliveries, you should contact the customs office instead of your local post office. That’s because USPS doesn’t have the permission to inquire about your delivery once they go out of the country.

You should always keep track of your delivery status so that you know when your parcel is delivered to the wrong address. The situation can also be reversed where you receive a wrong parcel. In both cases, you should inform the post office first.

What to do if my parcel gets misplaced?

First, take a look around your home to be sure that the package is dropped somewhere unexpected. Check the doors and back doors well. Also, ask your neighbors to see if the package was left there instead. Still cannot find the package? Check online to confirm that you have given the right address at the time of placing an order. Make sure that there is no fault from your side before charging the courier system.

Generally, the lost packages get delivered within a few days, if USPS delivered to wrong address. If USPS cannot locate the package after some days, they declare it as being lost. You can then be authorized to take any action, file a claim, and get a refund for the losses. USPS will ask for specific proof of the value of the content. Then they will examine the case and inform you of their final decision. They assure to do the best for their customers to get back the parcel.

It may take a couple of days to bring it back, or sometimes it may take a while when the person who has mistakenly received your package is not willing to give it up. In case the shipping company faces a significant delay, they will ask you for money back on shipping costs. They will back the original value of the contents as well as the shipping amount that you paid.

Tracking Status of the USPS Package that says Delivered

If you were tracking your parcel and now the status of your parcel says delivered, it does not necessarily mean USPS delivered to wrong address.

A few days ago I ordered a bag online and I had to go through a similar experience. I was tracking my package regularly and suddenly it said that USPS delivered my package. Like any normal person, my mind flipped and I started thinking of the worst possible scenario. USPS delivered to wrong address? Did I not enter the correct address? Is it even possible for me to get my package back now?

But to my surprise and ease, after waiting an extra business day for my bag to be delivered, it was delivered.

However, you may want to contact your local USPS post office at once if you experience a situation like this. It’s best to be proactive and take the situation in your own hands instead of sitting down and waiting for things to fix on their own.

I personally had to wait one more day because it was a weekend and there was really nothing much I could do.

Things to Do In case of International Delivery:

  • You should keep a check on your mailbox regularly, in case your local post office sends you a notice to pick up your parcel.
  • In the case of international deliveries, you should also contact your customs office and ask them to inquire about your delivery

Things NOT to Do:

  • You should not panic. Panicking does not help and will only worsen your judgment instead of fixing things. Normally, people do get worried and inquire around which is a good thing but after a day or two, they do receive the package.
  • In the case of international deliveries, it’s best to contact customs instead of USPS. USPS cannot really inquire about your parcels once they’ve reached a different country. Customs office is a much better option in that case.
